Kyle McFarlane Interview – By James Burch

Birmingham Cities Vital Football writer James Burch met up with Blues under 18 hot shot Kyle McFarlane to chat about how he is loving life playing for the team and how seeing Lee Clark`s policy of youth is giving him the drive to carry on improving, to one day reach the top.

The 17 year old from Birmingham has been a regular for the Birmingham City under 18`s side this year and has already scored two hat-ricks against QPR and Sheffield Wednesday respectively, in his first six games this season. His natural talent and raw pace is causing Lee Clark to sit up and take notice after raving reviews from Academy coach Steve Spooner.

He told Vital Football in an exclusive; “Birmingham found me when I was playing football at the park with a couple of friends and it just went from there really.”

After that he began to train and play for the younger age group sides and built his way up to the Under 18`s were he is prospering. For some young aspiring players there can be many distractions but for Kyle, he has got his eye on the prize and part of this is down to the encouragement of his father; “He is been here from the start and given me a lot of encouragement and done everything possible to help me get on in Football.”

He has had many great moments in the side so far being the Under 18`s lead marksman. However the memory that sticks most fondly in his memory is his 20 yard top corner finish against Cheltenham last year in the FA Youth Cup. This was a great start for him and then getting to play away at Everton where the team eventually got knocked out in the fourth round of the competition.

After this he carried on from strength to strength and under the guidance of his coaches and they have really helped enhance his prospects. He said; “The coaching does help immensely there is a clear structure in place and the sessions what are put on I think have helped me not only improve technically but tactically as well my mind has improved as well as my skills on the football.”

After seeing his close friends and fellow teammates Demarai Gray, Reece Brown and Koby Arthur progress from Under 18`s to First Team in the last year, Kyle can now see that with hard work anything is possible and he is definitely buoyed by this; “Having played with them and seeing them now in the first team its inspiring knowing that I could be where they are very soon. Hopefully in the near future I can join them as well.’

Kyle McFarlane clearly has the potential and the hunger to step into the first team frame and this is definitely his dream too; “I’d say by the end of the season do what Gray, Brown and Arthur have done and make my first team debut I think under the manager any young player has a great chance of getting into the first eleven of the seniors.”

For the time being though the striker is intent on doing well for the Academy side and has set himself some goals for the end of the year; “personally for me to score 20 goals and just play well and have no injuries hopefully have the best season I can.”

Kyle seems to be a very level headed and confident young man and if he carries on the way he is going it won`t be long before his name is being sung from the stands at St. Andrews in the next year or two.
