“I don`t want it to be Gianfranco Zola vs Gary Rowett, it`s Birmingham City vs Derby County”. Zola was always going to be asked questions about his predecessor and, in truth, he handled his media duties admirably yesterday afternoon.

While the return of Rowett has dominated the column inches, it`s easy to forget that there is a Championship clash on the horizon. Blues could desperately do with the win to propel them towards safety so while the Bluenoses in the terraces will undoubtedly laud their former manager, it`s imperative that they also back the team.

A win today would go a long way in ensuring the end of season run-in is as comfortable as it can be. Getting over the safety line must be a priority, anything else can take place over the summer months.

The Derby game has been billed as a ‘must win` and I`ve heard on the grapevine that the powers that be have communicated that fact to Zola – which may explain his decision to rest so many players for Tuesday`s visit to Brighton. It would come as no surprise to see the likes of David Davis and Lukas Jutkiewicz return to the starting eleven. Frankly, resting players for a clash against Brighton was a no-lose scenario – it was seemingly a game Blues were destined to lose 99 times out of 100. So, today, in front of the home faithful, Zola will play what he believes is his best team (assuming he knows his best team) and hope to get safety as good as confirmed.

Give Rowett the ovation he deserves, give him his 20 seconds of appreciation, then back the boys in blue. There`s a game to be won.

As always, Keep Right On!

  • Rob.I agree with your thoughts about returning players for this game. However,Zola should have been replaced with 10 games to go. Derby I am afraid will rely on Zola’s self destruct style of play to win this game more than Rowetts tactical plan.Rotherham will be the game where we feebly, pathetically rely upon for 3points-but who is really confident. We live in hope for today but sadly this totally inept and in my opinion frightened manager of ours will simply have nothing to offer.

  • Miami – I agree with you in part. The game plan today will be to score first then defend for our lives. However, I attend home games now with a lack of confidence similarly to the Clark days.

  • Taking the lead and then sitting back never works. If we are lucky enough to score 1 goal we need to get the next goal. Then maybe shut up shop no good defending a 1-0 lead or a 0-0 draw but defending a 2-0 lead as value. A point is better than a lose but we need all 3. Come on you Blues KRO..

  • Zola simply must walk. I plead with the club to get rid of this unlucky charm who is destroying us week by week. Rotherham next up and I cannot see us getting much. Draw about best. Panos will look back in a few weeks time that at 5games left we could have had a better shot. With Villa at Blackburn last game and us at Bristol my money is on Villa on the beach and Zola bemoaning his luck after the Bristol game. Who do we look to in order to avoid this-anyone available who knows the game and can get us 4points. As it is we are on target to get two,one each Rotherham next week and Burton the following Monday.
