Match day musings #15: Wolves v Blues

After last weekend`s dismal defeat and subsequent rant, I feel a bit calmer writing this article. Whether I`ll feel that way come 9.30pm on Friday evening remains to be seen. Having won one in 14 games, it`s easy to understand why some Blues fans (myself included – guilty as charged) have lost faith in the Gianfranco Zola. Until last week, I backed him to the hilt, defended him until I was blue in the face. One result – and pathetically poor performance – seems to have changed that.

But after Zola`s meet-and-greet with the fans at St. Andrews in midweek, he has pleaded with the fans ‘trust me`. And with TTA giving Zola their backing (for now) we have no other choice but to get behind him and the payers. So I apologise to anyone who took offence or was wound up by my comments post-QPR.

Going into the West Midlands derby at Molineux usually carries an anticipation and expectation. But it`s fair to say, the general feeling right now is a bit flat. Coming back to the aforementioned ‘one win in 14`, Blues really need to get to grips with things. We are surviving on the points won under Gary Rowett. Surely, we don`t have to win that many games to stay up this season – and surely Blues are capable of two or three wins?!

The defeat against Ian Holloway`s QPR was atrocious. The midfield was flimsy, created nothing and were overran and out muscled. Robert Tesche, I`ve said this before, brings absolutely nothing to the table and what has happened to Maikel Kieftenbeld this season? Having David Davis and Craig Gardner back should help a little. They`re two men you`d love to have in a battle.

The most worrying thing when drawing a comparison between last weekend and the previous 13 games is the lack of threat Blues carried. In between Emilio Nsue’s glaring header early on and his late not-even-a-consolation goal, nothing was evident to suggest Blues had any chance of making life uncomfortable for the visitors – and that was a major concern.

With every passing week, another chance to rectify the wrongs is presented. Let`s hope and pray that Wolves away will be more Fulham-esque than QPR-esque.

As always, Keep Right On!
