While the win against Fulham, Blues’ first under Gianfranco Zola, was a relief and long overdue, let’s not get carried away just yet. All this talk of a play-off push is premature considering Blues have won once in 11 games.

The 1-0 win, if anything, pushed us three points closer to safety. Not that Blues are in a relegation battle, but even the most confident fan must have been nervously looking over their shoulder after the recent slump in results.

The trip to Sheffield Wednesday tonight represents a tough challenge, the sort of challenge that no team would want after breaking a winning duck. Wednesday are firmly in the play-off hunt and are massive favourites for the game. Zola will be vying for his team to continue playing in the way that they are beginning to get used to. And he’ll be looking for another big performance from his players.

It’s about taking it one step at a time. Fulham was one step. And if Blues can win two of their next three or four games, that’ll be another step. Finishing in the top half with a decent end to the season is the aim – then a vital pre season lies in wait. Of course, making the play-offs isn’t impossible, just very unlikely. Blues will have very little room for error if they’re to mount any sort of run.

The game at Hillsborough is live on Sky SportsĀ  – usually a curse for Birmingham City. Let’s hope it’s nothing like the televised trip we had to Burton Albion.

Let’s just enjoy it and hope for the best.

As always, Keep Right On!
