The sale of Barnsley captain Marc Roberts is expected to be completed by the weekend with Blues thought to be front runners.

Jonathan Buchan, of BBC Radio Sheffield, tweeted – ‘#Barnsleyfc CEO Gauthier Ganaye tells me the sale of Captain Mark Roberts will probably be completed before the weekend’.

The 26-year-old has also been the subject of interest from Hull City and two other Championship clubs but is thought to be keen  on a switch to St. Andrews.

Gary Rowett tried to sign Roberts during his time as Blues manager but had two bids rejected – the second understood to be £1.5m. The defenders value appears to have trebled since then with Harry Redknapp likely to part with the best part of  £5m for the six-foot stopper.

Redknapp’s initial interest in Roberts arised at the end of May but with the player on holiday, Redknapp’s enquiry went unanswered for over a week. It now seems that a deal is close while both clubs negotiate a package.

Roberts joined the Tykes in 2015 from Halifax on a free transfer. He’s appeared 84 times in his two seasons at Oakwell scoring six goals.
