So Craig Gardner does not know whether he will stay with Birmingham City or whether he will want away to one of the various clubs that have been circling like vultures since Blues went down.

On one hand I can quite understand anyone at the club getting itchy feet at the moment, A new manager will be winging his way through the door and we know that Gardner thought a lot of Alex McLeish. Any working man wants to know what the future holds for him, not something you could say if you are on the staff at Birmingham at the moment.

And would the club want to keep him? They have made the right noises about wanting to keep the best players but Gardner must know deep down that if the right offer came in, he would be off down the road.

Or it may just be that he does not want to stay at St Andrews now that McLeish is off down the road to Villa? Could he be hoping that he will be one of McLeish`s first signings, taking him back to Vale Park?

That would go down well, not.

I would have hoped that somebody like Gardner who has “stood on the terraces at Birmingham supporting them since he was a kid” would show a bit of loyalty and make it hard for the club to let him go because of his home grown pride and ambition for the club he claims to love.

Wolves are looking to grab Gardner, so are Sunderland, both clubs are not exactly giants in the Premier League and going to one of them, especially Wolves and he could be looking at moving again because of relegation.

But Sunderland look favourites to take him away from St Andrews, Bruce really wants him and could possibly stump up a little more than the £5million fee that is being suggested that he is worth, now they have ripped off Liverpool for Jordan Henderson.

And the 24-year-old says that he is in limbo at the moment, telling the local media: “It`s a difficult one and I`m unsure exactly what`s happening behind the scenes and what the board are thinking.

“Like every other player, you have to think of your career. I`ve just had my best season, I felt at home in the Premier League, it`s the best league in the world, and now we`ve gone down to the Championship.

“Where are we going, what are we planning to do? I don`t know.

“It`s not a good start to the summer losing Alex. There`s a cloud over everybody`s head.

“Nobody knows what`s happening. We`ve gone down to the Championship, we`ve lost our manager.

“Are players leaving? Is money going to be spent?”

Hows it go again? Ah yes….”I can`t wait to put on a Sunderland shirt, I used to stand on the……..”
