Maikel the Midfield Machine

A measly £170,000 doesn`t buy you much these days. Or so people assume. But just say that to Gary Rowett. For near enough that figure, he managed to bring in a midfielder who is a ball winner, a decent passer and chips in with the odd goal.

Maikel Kieftenbeld rightly received praise for his performance at Derby County. The Dutchman went toe-to-toe with a midfield that cost more to assemble than Blues` entire squad.

Alongside Stephen Gleeson, Blues have a solid foundation down the middle of the park. Throw Jon Toral into the mix and Blues can be a force to be reckoned with? on their day, I hasten to add.

Like every player in world football, Kieftenbeld (and Gleeson) will have off days. As Gary Rowett puts it, we have a hard working team with a bit of quality. Sometimes we`ll get outplayed and out thought, but never out battled.

As we are all well aware, Blues are not in a financial position to splash out on lavishly priced talent. But with a good scouting network and a manager making the right calls, who needs millions and millions to spend?

Kieftenbeld`s volley was from the very top drawer, just like his performance. The entire Blues team deserved the three points and a massive pat on the back in the process. But with Ipswich rocking up at St. Andrew`s on Saturday, we must keep the foot on the gas and go again.
