Nikola Zigic had an 11th minute penalty saved while the Blues went on to lose out to SC Braga 1-0 in Portugal.
Now City have to win the final game and hope that the other result in the group goes their way.
Zigic saw his kick saved by Quim in the Braga goal before holding on all the game only to go down thanks to a lucky strike from Hugo Viana in the 50th minute that found City`s net via a deflection off Curtis Davies.
Both Braga and Brugge are three points in front of City in the table after Brugge beat Birmingham`s last opponents Maribor.
Now City need help in the final games, they need to beat Maribor and hope that Brugge and Braga don`t draw.
