Former Birmingham City defender Liam Ridgewell has embarked on a new journey having signed for MLS side Portland Timbers.

Ridgewell is apparently a large signing for the Timbers as they proclaim he turned down several offers from Premier League clubs in order to take the trip to USA. American clubs understandably see players from the Premier League as top players.

The former Albion and Villa defender had attended a game in Portland and was impressed by the atmosphere of the club and its aspirations. The club seem to have convinced the player a competitive future lays in front of him in the States. On another plus Liam may well become a great star player in the MLS as its reputation continues to grow.

The MLS season is to start very soon so Liam will be hoping he has stayed sufficiently fit over the English closed season. Ridgewell has not cost the MLS team a transfer fee after Albion quietly showed the Carling Cup winner the door following their desperate end to the season under Pepe Mel.

Liam Ridgewell played for Birmingham City between the years of 2007 – 2012 after signing for around £2 million from rivals Aston Villa. The defender played over 150 times for the Blues scoring 9 league goals.
