Melissa Lawley, Birmingham Ladies 21 year-old striker, has today signed a new contract with the club keeping her in a royal blue shirt.

Melissa is the type of player that fans absolutely love because they feel like she is putting on a show. She is one of the fastest players in the women’s game with lightening quick pace and feet to match. Not only can she finish with aplomb, she also has the composure to pick out other team mates when this is needed.

An all round good attacker, Lawley has really impressed last season and the contract extension shows that David Parker, the Birmingham City manager, believes in her. Having made her debut 4 years ago at a mere 17 years of age, she has gone on to cement a first team slot and learnt so much from the wise players around her such as Karen Carney.

As has been documented on this website, a number of key players have left the Blues’ Ladies in the hope of winning the title with other clubs after Birmingham narrowly avoided relegation last season. The wealth in the game is improving and this only extends the pull factors to the top clubs for experienced players.

It’s good to see however, that Lawley hasn’t been attracted by bigger clubs as I believe it’ll ruin her progress. We pride ourselves on our youth set up at Birmingham. Many players are young and inexperienced which is why last season, we hadn’t quite gelled. But Parker knows how to build a squad of youngsters and it will take time but the renewal of Lawley’s contract shows great faith in this youthful football approach.
