Middlesbrough Football Club have banned three fans from the Riverside for life after they were found guilty of causing racial or religiously aggravated harassment, alarm or distress. The fans were a part of a group of supporters that ripped up the Koran and used it as confetti.

Stewards from Birmingham City Football Club observed the behaviour inside the ground and also gave evidence at Birmingham magistrate`s court. The group of up to six were singing racially motivated songs and ripping up the holy text.

One of the accused pleaded not guilty and argued she did not realise it was the Koran, simply paper that she hadn`t taken the time to enquire what was on it. She says she was just handed it near the market in Birmingham.

The court fined the three but did not give them football banning orders. It is Middlesbrough that has taken that action.

It is important that football grounds are a place of accountability, for them to be accessible to everyone they need to be able to have an environment where people like the ones in this case are unable to spread and share their views of disrespect towards others. Well done MFC, well done.
