Stephen Kelly is beginning to like reporters following his potential £1.25 million move from Spurs.

Speaking to the media, the player went into more detail than was covered in our story yesterday, and explained why swopping the Premiership for the Championship was hardly a decision worth thinking about.

‘That wasn’t a concern, with the manager, the squad of players we have and the players we’ve brought in, you’ve got to think we’re one of the main contenders to go up.

‘Really, Birmingham are still a Premiership club when you look at the set-up and the support. I think with the kind of determination and approach we are showing, if we can get off to a good start and show some form, we’ll have every chance.

‘I am quite versatile, I can play right-back, left-back – all the defensive positions. But I do prefer right-back and that’s where the manager sees me.

‘I hope I can join in with the attacks and give more to the team than just the defensive side of my job.

‘Jermaine is a fantastic player and that’s going to be a big thing, to show that we are able to bond well.

‘I am looking forward to linking up with him. He’s got pace and is great on the ball.’

Speaking on his full Republic cap, and the chances of gaining more he said:

‘I think he just wants me to be playing first-team football, if I perform well, then I’m sure I will get an opportunity.

‘It came to the point when I had to think about my career. Spurs are a great club but I need to play on a regular basis to really establish myself.

‘I’m going to get that chance here and I can’t wait for the season to begin.’

Kelly is also excited by the number of youngsters that Bruce is going to hinge promotion on.

‘When you have young, confident players wanting to do well, they give that bit extra to the team.

‘The manager has brought in a couple of us now and I get the impression there are more to come.

‘I think we have players who are good enough for this league but who would also be able to perform in the Premiership.’
