Rob Kiernan, Rangers’ latest signing, has hit back at Birmingham after the club claimed they pulled the plug on the recent deal to bring him to Blues.

The centre back has gone on record to say that it was him that put a stop to the deal after being made aware that Rangers wanted to sign him.

Birmingham may have put out that they ended the deal in order to save some reputation damage. It isn’t ideal to have a player pull out of a deal so close to completion in order to go to the Scottish league.

Kiernan has also joined up with Rangers, where a former manager of his, at youth level, is now in charge. Mark Warburton made the former Wigan man his first signing at the Ibrox stadium.

In fairness, the statement that Birmingham put out was written in what I would call soft language. They left it open to interpretation as to whether Kiernan had indeed failed the medical. What it actually stated was that Blues’ doctors weren’t happy with ‘some aspects of the medical’.

Given that Kiernan passed his Rangers medical with flying colours it points to the clubs having different fitness standards or Blues media team have made a bit of a gaff with the statement they put out.

Either way it is not ideal for the club to get involved in public slanging matches. I would prefer the club to clarify its position on the matter and put it to bed. Is the club being honest with the media or is it seeking to safe face at all costs?

The matter within itself is not particularly a large one, but it wouldn’t be a good precedent set in the way they deal with unfavorable media coverage.

I still find it hard to believe that the club would feel the need to mislead the fans on something like this. If the player selected another club then so be it.

This seems like something that will remained unresolved until someone like Rowett clears it up in a interview during the pre-season.
