Keeping Patient In Birmingham City’s Very Quiet Summer

|

It’s very easy to get impatient during the close season. With no games to talk about, discussion about the club inevitably gravitates towards transfers.

When you start off the transfer window slowly, that impatience grows a bit more as you begin to worry whether the club are either missing out on their main targets or are waiting to offload players before making any concrete bids.

Speculation tends to take over, as we have seen with the rumour about Kristoffer Nordfeldt on Twitter. Not one printable source offline or online, for that matter, has linked us with the Swedish international.

Yet, it does get people talking. Garry Monk signed him for Swansea, and therefore the player is someone the manager may look at again. The player is certainly not happy about his playing situation at the Welsh club as a recent interview suggests.

However, other than that, the evidence is thin on the ground. Considering we are looking to sell both David Stockdale and Tomasz Kuszczak this summer, it’s strange we haven’t been linked with more goalkeepers, but I’m not complaining really about the lack of leaks.

As the manager said in May, there is a plan in place for this summer’s transfer dealings:

“The natural process is there will have to be comings and goings, that’s the nature of every football club every single season. I have got my ideas, I have got a very good relationship with the owners and the senior board.”

There has been talk online that we may be delaying transfers until July for reasons related to Financial Fair Play. It is said that it will allow us to put back any costs from recruitment into a new accounting year. Again though, that is purely conjecture.

Hopefully, with the World Cup people will be distracted by Cheikh N’Doye’s career-defining displays for Senegal over the coming weeks, and then by July we can then get on to talking about our pre-season matches and the campaign ahead.

I am certainly hopeful that we’ll make some moves for our transfer targets soon, but I certainly don’t see the need to be frustrated at this time as I have seen nothing from Monk so far to suggest that he can’t be fully trusted to make the right decisions.
