Journalist Reveals That 23 Year Old Has Ruled Out Birmingham Switch

|

The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that John McGinn has set his sights on joining Celtic over a move to the Championship.

On his Twitter account (via Football League World), the reporter confirmed that both us and Derby were in for the 23-year-old, but the player indicated that he was only interested in a switch to the Scottish champions:

“Derby and Birmingham were keen … but message came back that he would head for Celtic.”

Considering our transfer situation, it isn’t much of a setback. Although, with Celtic haggling over McGinn’s fee and bidding just £2m, there’s no doubt that we could have outbid the SPFL side if the midfielder was more amenable to a move.

As things stand though, we won’t be bringing in anybody. After the friendly against Brighton on Saturday, Garry Monk said that both he and the club were waiting for some clarity on the situation.

That kind of suggests to me that the EFL are in the process of making a decision over our finances. Whether it comes too late for this transfer window, we will have to wait and see.
