Lee Clark has handed Joshua Martin a first team squad number at the tender age of 15 years old.

The manager has revealed that the youngster is not too far away from making his senior debut in a press conference this morning, ahead of the visit of Leeds to St Andrews.

The young defender is obviously held in high reserve by the manage after impressing in the development teams.

Gavin Gunning being injured may also have had a role to play in this situation. With Birmingham yet to bring in a replacement for the injured stopper Clark may be making the best of a bad situation. Blooding new talent is a way of hopefully making up the numbers.

For Martin to warrant a first team spot he is going to have to out train the likes of Will Packwood and Paul Robinson who both hope to be starting in the defence if Edgar is not passed as fit.

Grant Hall seems to be the linchpin at the back for Birmingham this season with Edgar preferred with him. Should Edgar move back into midfield the centre back position could be wide open.

It remains to be seen how the fans may react to such a young player being trailed for the first team. Is this young man really great? or are Birmingham running out of options?
