January investment is needed at Birmingham City

It is fair to say that Birmingham City and Gary Rowett were both given a footballing masterclass on Saturday afternoon by Newcastle United.

They absolutely obliterated Blues and they were just better in every department of the pitch. Whether that was fitness wise, attacking wise, defensive wise or even just the tactical side of the game, they were much better than us.

And because Blues have now shipped seven goals in the last two games it is clear for all to see that in order for the club to even think about getting into the play-offs, we need some serious investment in the January transfer window.

Now I am not being one of those fans who jumps on the band wagon of ‘Gary Rowett out!’ because that is just stupid! Granted, it was the first time we have conceded four goals since he has been in charge but just look at what a side can do with a bit of money.

Albeit this is supposed to be the most defensively sound we have been since Rowett has been in charge, there were plenty of areas we could have improved on in the last two games.

To begin with, Blues desperately need to bring in some much needed competition for Jonathan Grounds. His performances of late have been very under par and because Blues have no natural replacement for him, he thinks he can get away with those sort of turn outs.

Well, if Blues can bring in a competitive full back to offer him the fight he needs every week then I think we will see him return to form or he may even have some time out of the side, who knows!

It was also clear to see that Blues lacked any athleticism in the middle of the park. Yes David Davis was out suspended but we can’t always rely on him.

I would say give Reece Brown a go but I don’t think he is quite as physical as we need him to be just yet so I would say that we need to bring in another central midfielder in the winter transfer window.

Personally, I would like to see an older midfielder come in, somebody who knows the league well, somebody who has been here before and can add that little bit of composure to the midfield.

If we have to pay a few million for him, whoever he may be, then do it because we really need somebody who is an all round midfielder.

Then we head into the final third of the pitch. For me, a new winger and another striker are needed.

I hate slagging players off but Clayton Donaldson and David Cotterill were so poor on Saturday and they need replacing quick time.

Okay, Blues might not be able to find somebody who does the running that Donaldson does or the set piece delivery that Cotterill brings to the team but there has to be better players out there.

Donaldson couldn’t hit a barn door even if he wanted to and Cotterill really struggled to find an out ball at the weekend like he has done in the past few weeks so Rowett has some serious thinking to do.

In January, I think Rowett should be looking to add at least three, maybe four or even five players to his squad to keep the momentum going.

Blues fans, where do you think the club needs to strengthen in January and how many players would you like to see brought in? Let us know in the comment section down below!
