Republic of Ireland defender Stephen Carr has announced his retirement from football, this time for good.

The Birmingham City full-back has not played a game this season because of his knee injury so he has decided to call it quits because at 37, he does not see a comeback next season.

Carr initially retired from the game back in January 2009, but just two months later he was donning the Blue shirt again after being persuaded to return.

That season he was part of the team that reached the Premier League, two years later he was lifting the League Cup at Wembley after beating Arsenal in the final.

Carr signed a one-year contract last summer, but a knee problem caused him to go under the surgeon’s knife three times in 18 months and after being on the sidelines for so long, Carr has decided to go into business in Spain.

He told the club’s official website:‘The last time I stopped playing was when I was 31 and it was because I couldn’t get a club. This time it’s different.’

He went on to say: ‘I am 37 in August and I’ve had a good innings in the end. My knee has lasted out quite well, but it comes to the stage where enough is enough with it.’

Of course staff at Vital Blues wish Stephen all the best for the future.
