Birmingham City manager Harry Redknapp is eyeing up an ambitious double defensive swoop for Newcastle United’s Grant Hanley and Liverpool’s Andre Wisdom, according to a source believed to be Northern Echo writer Alan Nixon.

Hanley was wanted by Derby County before Newcastle rejected their £4m bid – £1.5m below what they paid Blackburn Rovers for his services one year ago.

The 25-year-old Scotland international has four years remaining on his contract at St. James’ Park and picks up a salary in the region of £45,000 a week – a figure that may prove to be too far out of Blues’ reach.

Wisdom, 24, has been at Liverpool since 2012 but has made only 14 first team appearances. The bulk of his football has arrived during four loan spells at Derby, West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City and Red Bull Salzburg respectively.

The versatile defender has represented England at every level up to U21.

It’s not known whether Blues’ interest is for a permanent transfer or a loan deal – but Liverpool could demand in excess of £3.5m for the Leeds-born man.
