International break the cue to rest Clayton Donaldson

Over the course of the last 10 days, Birmingham City forward Clayton Donaldson has been away on international duty with the Jamaican football team and for me, that means he has to be rested ahead of this weekends fixture with Fulham.

As much as I love Donaldson, at 32, he surely can’t recover that quickly from covering thousands of miles so for that reason, I think Blues boss Gary Rowett will certainly look to utilise his other attacking options that he has at his disposal, and rightly so.

Blues now have the likes of Che Adams, Greg Stewart and newly signed loanee Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Okay, Stewart isn’t an out and out striker but he can certainly play there but for me, the game against the Cottagers isn’t where I would give him his first start because of how well they have been playing so far this season.

But when you look at how well former Sheffield United forward Adams has started, it would be hard not to say that he needs to play up front and stand in for Donaldson should he be rested for the game on Saturday.

Although I am unsure that Adams would be able to do the same sort of job that Donaldson does, I do think he would offer us a much better outlet going forward, especially with our counter attacking style of play that we play away from home.

The 20-year-old forward is very quick and he is aware of everything around him which is what Blues seem to have been lacking when trying to counter attack in recent away games, including some last season, but if we can generate enough for Adams to feed off then it could be yet another successful trip to London for Blues.

On the other hand, Rowett could stick with Adams playing on the right hand side, allowing him to drift in as and when he wants to and he could throw on loan Burnley striker Jutkiewicz straight into the mix.

The 27-year-old, who joined Blues until January 2nd on deadline day, is no stranger to the Championship so it wouldn’t be like throwing a fish onto land and watching it struggle.

Personally, I think he would cope really well with being thrown straight back into the action, especially as he has a point to prove in front of goal, but I am unclear on Rowett’s thinking behind what he will play on Saturday.

Whatever Rowett does choose to go with, I sincerely hope he gives Donaldson a rest because boy will we need him this season and if he gets injured, the goals will soon become fewer than we already have and that isn’t a lot as it is!
