Birmingham manager Chris Hughton is making no secret of his desire to sign Chris Wood from West Brom, but he is prepared for them to say no.

Wood is no longer at St Andrews having returned to his parent club after his loan spell at City came to an end, Now Hughton hopes that Wood will follow his team mate Guirane N’Daw in signing until the end of the season. He told the Birmingham Post: ‘There would be teams in this division that only work with three strikers because they might be teams that sometimes play one off the front.

‘We can do that as well, but the fact is I’ve generally tended to play two strikers in most games more often than not. Then, yes, I would like four strikers at the club, but it’s certainly not the end of the world if it doesn’t happen.

‘We would like to bring him back. It’s a loan that has worked out well both ways.

We have been able to give him the games and the experience at this level and of course, what he has given us back is performances and goals.

‘We certainly would like to bring him back but West Brom have been very good – the lines of communication have been very good – and he’s their player.’
