Former fans favourite Bryan Hughes believes that Blues need stability if they are to start climbing up the Championship table. The midfielder who 247 league appearances for Birmingham City scoring 47 goals took time out to talk to Vital Football reporter James Burch to tell him that a lot needs to be changed at St. Andrews if the club managed by Lee Clark is to return to its former glory in the Premier League.

Hughes told Vital Football; “For the size of the club, it is sad really. They massively need stability, last season we survived by the skin of our teeth and this season has been really topsy turvy too.” Blues who currently sit in 20th position in the league, four points above the drop zone have picked up of late picking up a crucial four points out of six away at Millwall and Charlton but in the eyes of the Liverpudlian, Blues still should be doing a lot more.

As well as being instrumental in the 2002 play-off winning side under Steve Bruce at Blues, Hughes played with some Birmingham greats such as Christophe Dugarry, Geoff Horsfield and Kenny Cunningham taking Blues to the Worthington Cup Final in 2001 where managed by Bruce lost agonisingly 5-4 on penalties to Liverpool.

Bryan Hughes thinks that with all the uncertainty going on behind closed doors at St. Andrews it can`t be good for the players and he doesn’t think this will change until a new owner is installed at the club, Hughes told Burch; “There was talk a while back that Jasper Carrott had a consortium interested in the club, he`d do a great job if he took charge because he understands the fans and the tradition of the club and he is loved.”

Blues go into Saturday`s home game against Bolton Wanderers knowing that new manager Neil Lennon will be on the touchline for the Whites and with tough games coming up against Blackburn away, Bournemouth at home and Wolves away it will take all of Birmingham`s resilience and fight, similar to the battle that Hughes showed in his seven years at the club.
