How Much Have Birmingham Earned Since 1992?

With the £100million television ceiling being broken this season and handed to one club, where do Birmingham City fall in all time Premier League payments table?

With the Premier League releasing the figures for the total broadcasting payments in the division for 2015/16, with the full break downs, we already know Arsenal broke the £100million mark, and despite being relegated, Aston Villa picked up a new record £66 odd million for finishing in second place.

It also means Villa earned more than the Bundesliga Champions and Champions League Semi Finalists Bayern Munich this campaign, which does put the financial advantages of the English top flight into perspective – especially with next season it being said clubs will average around the £125million mark, and the team coming in 20th will pick up roughly what Arsenal did this year.

In the opening rebrand year of 1992/93 – 22 clubs shared a total pot of £38million and for 2015/16 that was £1.64billion shared.

Manchester United next year will be the first club to earn £1billion outright in historical prize money and they only need to secure a sixth place finish to achieve that, having already earned nearly £900million in the season’s since. With Arsenal and Liverpool trailing in second and third place respectively and Liverpool only £55million odd behind the Old Trafford side, it’s not going to be long at all before more hit the billion ceiling.

Considering one way or another it comes from the fans – tv subscriptions, merchandising, tickets, match day costs, oh yeah, sponsors and private companies try to attract us to spend as well and justify their advertising budget – you’d think a bit more than a £30 cap on away tickets could be achieved by the pockets we line.

Anyway, Spreadex.com have crunched the historical figures going back to the Premier League’s inception and have worked out what clubs have earned in total since.

And eligible clubs – 49 in total – have taken a total of £14.8billion in receipts in the past 24 years. Of those 49 clubs, Notts County and Luton Town qualify for the list with £1.49million dished out as parachute payments, despite neither having kicked a Premier League sponsored ball as they were relegated in the 1991/92 season from the old Division One.

As for the table itself, the top ten – with a number of ever presents is probably pretty predictable for all. The middle pack less so unless you are a fan of that club, so the only surprises really come further down the list where, with respect, only fans of those clubs probably remember them being in the division with the figures received showing how long it’s been since they were in the top flight.

I imagine the more discerning and wiser/elder fans amongst us won’t be as surprised as younger fans though to be fair.
