Harry Redknapp setting the bench mark

Gone are the days when a football club could negotiate the entire season with just eleven players and one substitute. Nowadays, the importance of squad depth has never been so telling.

Harry Redknapp is attempting to build a Birmingham City squad that can mount a push for promotion next term. But just as crucially, he’s making sure the foundations are down deeper into the pocket.

Adam Legzdins and Paul Robinson have both signed one year contract extension this week. Seemingly, both will be bit part players who are called upon when needs must. For that reason, tying the duo down for a further 12 months is good business.

Legzdins isn’t a bad keeper, he’s just not Tomasz Kuszczak. He is, in every sense, a second choice.

Robbo may have played a few games towards the back end of last season – and then missed the final two through suspension – but Redknapp had to make do with the hand he was dealt.

The hope is that, going into next season, Blues will have more depth to their squad, a more refined outlook in the ranks.

But the old saying goes: ‘a team is only as good as their bench’.
