Gone are the days when a football club could negotiate the entire season with just eleven players and one substitute. Nowadays, the importance of squad depth has never been so telling.

Harry Redknapp is attempting to build a Birmingham City squad that can mount a push for promotion next term. But just as crucially, he’s making sure the foundations are down deeper into the pocket.

Adam Legzdins and Paul Robinson have both signed one year contract extension this week. Seemingly, both will be bit part players who are called upon when needs must. For that reason, tying the duo down for a further 12 months is good business.

Legzdins isn’t a bad keeper, he’s just not Tomasz Kuszczak. He is, in every sense, a second choice.

Robbo may have played a few games towards the back end of last season – and then missed the final two through suspension – but Redknapp had to make do with the hand he was dealt.

The hope is that, going into next season, Blues will have more depth to their squad, a more refined outlook in the ranks.

But the old saying goes: ‘a team is only as good as their bench’.

  • A team is only good as their bench after the first choice 11 players are good enough , in recent seasons their goal difference has been an insult to the fans …every time we get some money to spend we fall shy of signing a proven striker , WAKE UP BLUES ….the squad is only as good as it’s goal difference …and we need goals ..first signing should be to resign Chris wood again , then to sign a goalscoring goalmaking midfield player then a defender with pace then the bench ..

  • I think it’s terrible business both Legs and Robbo shouldve been moved on. Legs is league 1 standard and Robbo is just too old and slow. Keep him as a coach by all means but we need someone younger.

  • Ljaz – you won’t a championship standard keeper that is happy to sit on the bench

  • “A team is only good as their bench after the first choice 11 players are good enough”

    What the absolute F@£*?

So you’re saying that team is only as good as its first 11 plus the bench?

    Spot on Columbo!!!

  • A car is only as good as the rest of the car apart from the engine, after the engine is good enough. Lol

    Wahahahahahaha. Go Columbo!!!!!

  • A cake is only as nice as the bit apart from the sponge if the sponge is nice.

  • A gin and tonic is only as the nice as the tonic, of the Gin is nice too.

There’s a genius on the loose.

  • I think you’ve unlocked the secret to dominating the English game. What you need is a bench good enough to win the Premiership after you’ve got a first 11 good enough to win the Premiership.

How can this have been overlooked for so long?

  • So what your saying is if Kuszczak picks up a serious injury or loss of form our only option left should be “not up to championship standards”. That’s a hell of a way to set up a team with ambitions to do well. I beg to differ and think we need to have top players challenging for each position.
