Birmingham City have appointed Harry Redknapp as their new manager. The 70 year-old replaces Gianfranco Zola who resigned from his role following yesterday`s 2-0 home reverse to Burton Albion.

Redknapp comes with a wealth of experience having previously managed Tottenham Hotspur, QPR, Portsmouth and West Ham United.

His most recent post came as head coach of the Jordan national team where he was under a short term contract. He has been out of permanent work since undergoing a knee operation two years ago.

Vital Blues understands that that Blues` owners, Trillion Trophy Asia, held conversations with Redknapp a fortnight ago as they considered their options for next season. Zola`s appointment has pushed the process forward a lot quicker than anticipated.

Redknapp`s first game in charge will be against Aston Villa on Sunday.
