Hancox Out in the Cold

Surely the question in every Birmingham City fans head this season is ‘Where is Mitchell Hancox?’ The last two years the twenty year old born and bred Brummie has broke through as a starter at the club featuring nineteen and fourteen times respectively predominantly featuring at left back. After persistent injuries to David Murphy, Mitch took his chance and the general consensus was that he would now be a starter for many years to come.

His never say die attitude and passion for the badge on the Royal Blue shirt made him an instant fans favourite but Lee Clark seems to have completely forgotten about him. His crunching tackles and hunger was one of the highlights of last season when nobody else seemed to massively shine as Blues survived by the skin of their teeth.

With manager Clark persisting with playing Scotsman Paul Caddis in midfield instead of in his favoured right back position and with Robinson, Eardley and Grounds having slipped up and suffered with niggles in the early part of the 2014/15 Championship campaign the obvious choice would be to play Hancox. However the management at Blues seem to think differently for some reason.

Solihull born Hancox who set up the first goal in last seasons dramatic relegation saving game at Bolton last season has played thirty three games for Birmingham in the last two years but has failed to even kick a ball in anger in the league this year. With the defence not being the strongest having already conceded fourteen in eight games surely it is now time to bring him back into the fold.

Hancox’s biggest competition for the left back slot is former Oldham Athletic and Middlesbrough man Jonathan Grounds, bar his air kick away at Brentford that handed them an equaliser he has been steady but lacks pace and is weak going forward attacking whereas numerous times last year Mitch was caught in the oppositions half.

Blues go into this Saturdays fixture in twentieth position the league above bottom side Fulham by six points and another home loss definitely won’t convince the St.Andrews faithful that Clark is making the right decision by keeping Hancox out of the team.
