Grounds for Praise

Jonathan Grounds was never meant to be a marquee signing. As a free transfer from Oldham Athletic back in June 2014, the Teesider was drafted in by former manager Lee Clark to challenge Mitch Hancox for a regular place in the starting eleven.

Grounds suffered a torrid start to his Blues career which included a change of manager. But performances soon picked up and he was described as ‘Mr Consistent` by Gary Rowett.

The 27 year-old left-back has been criticised by some fans this season for a few abject displays but more often than not, Grounds has been a reliable part of Blues` make-up. Having clocked in 77 appearances in a season-and-a-half, Grounds rarely receives the praise he deserves.

In the back-to-back 3-0 wins at Derby and at home to Ipswich, Grounds was solid and assured against very decent opposition.

Yes, he has bad games and makes mistakes from time to time. But what do we, as Blues fans, expect? If he never, ever made a mistake, he wouldn`t be playing for Birmingham City.

As far as free transfers go, Grounds was a pretty good one – never spectacular, sometimes shaky but nearly always decent.
