Gray Days

I knew it wouldn’t be long before the Dimmy Gray rumours came back. First, he was going to Bournemouth. Now, he’s off to Leicester. But let’s look at the facts.

Liverpool have first refusal on the winger. ‎That is a fact. There is a get-out clause in the region of £5m written into Gray’s contract. That is also a fact. Liverpool haven’t been informed of an offer. Blues haven’t received an offer. More facts.

But why are we worried?

Firstly, how committed to the club is Gray if he insisted on a get-out clause being written in? Not very. Contracts in football are hardly valuable. Contracts with get-out clauses are worthless. Gray was happy enough to sign a deal which meant his wages increased, but not happy enough to commit to the club for the period of the actual contract.

If he wants out, let him go.

I believe in Panos Pavlakis enough to trust that some of the money raised from his sale would be reinvested in the squad. And I believe in Gary Rowett enough to trust that he would invest that money wisely.

The offer Blues turned down from Bournemouth in the summer was measly. The overall value may have been £6m, but the ‘up front’ payment was very low.

Everyone at Birmingham City accepts that they may lose Gray, but that’s is football. Without the release clause, Gray wouldn’t have signed the deal, meaning he walks at the end of the season for sod all. Not a dime.

The question now is, do Blues have enough in their tank to minimise the loss?

As mentioned earlier, no bid has come in from Leicester. But they have shown an interest. Until a bid comes in, we get on with things as they were.
