David Gold believes as soon as Matthew Upson proves his fitness clubs will be in for our star defender.

Having had his latest comeback attempt delayed until November, David Gold has admitted that Blues may have a hard time keeping hold of the player come January if he’s back to fitness and form.

The player had been linked to a move to Liverpool before he ruptured an achilles tendon in the warm up against Villa in April.

Speaking to the press, Chairman Gold said:

‘If he plays well, clubs will show an interest and it will be difficult to hold on to him.

‘But it depends who comes in for him. If it’s someone like Liverpool, it’s tough to tell the player he can’t go.

‘That is what we found when Jermaine Pennant left Birmingham for Liverpool.

‘But if it is a Bolton or a Wigan, we can tell Matthew that we can be as good as they are.

‘For now, though, what a player Upson is for us to have waiting in the wings. He is a top player and we obviously want all our best players fit again.’
