Blues double their goalkeeper coaching staff.

The role of ‘Head of Academy Goalkeeping Coach’ was announced earlier this week. Sam Meek, who is a vastly experienced coach, was the man that was recruited. As written by the Birmingham City Academy website, ‘Meek was the head of academy goalkeeping coach at Bolton Wanderers for several years.’

It shows that Birmingham City are trying to bring through youth players into the first team by introducing them to the style of play that is expected at first team level. By adding Sam Meek to the staff, it shows intent and enables fewer finances to be spent on transfers in the future.

The Birmingham City Academy website goes on to welcome another member of staff into the academy. Adrian Tucker will take up the position as the Academy Goalkeeping Coach Consultant.

Again, Tucker will add experience, having coached the Welsh Woman’s national team and also, he was the goalkeeping coach for Swansea City until earlier this year; a very good addition to the staff.

‘We would like to welcome the both of them to the BCFC Academy and wish them the best of luck in their new roles!’

Having had good young goalkeepers such as Joe Hart and Jack Butland in recent years, the rate at which Birmingham City are producing good young goalkeepers has slowed down. By assigning new coaches that are knowledgeable, the confidence will generate through to the defence as well. This will hopefully mean more clean sheets are gained, as they have been hard to come by in recent weeks.
