Gleeson Red Leaves Rowett Short

Birmingham City will need to find another central partnership in deep midfield before the next game following Stephen Gleeson’s red card late on against Brentford.

Likely replacements include Rob Kiernan, Callum Reilly and Reece Brown unless Blues can sign another player in the mean time.

Kiernan last played in midfield against Brighton, in what was his first game since joining on loan. Safe to say he did not do too well in what was an unsettled midfield without its VIP David Davis. Probably more comfortable at centre back I would not want to see him return to midfield.

Callum Reilly has failed to impress from the bench and has had limited game time so far this season. I’m aware some Blues fans do not rate the midfielder and would not want to see him start the next game, he hasn’t had a fair crack in the team yet under Rowett.

Finally there is Reece Brown. Gary Rowett has talked about what the midfielder lacks in his off the ball skills and doesn’t want to use him in the first team until he improves on his tracking back, positional play etc.

Although, playing alongside someone like David Davis may offset what Brown doesn’t do without the ball and allow Blues to enjoy the benefits of what he can do with it. A possibly exciting prospect for Blues in the middle with Brown and Davis.

With that said Blues have informed us that there could be news on a possible signing this Monday. If there is any position that needs another player it is the holding midfield department.

I’m not sure what Rowett will do about the problem of holding midfield now that Gleeson will miss 3 games for his straight red but he has a decision to make.
