Gianfranco Zola desperately needs a striker in January

Following Birmingham City’s second loss in a row under new boss Gianfranco Zola, albeit to one of the most in form sides in the division, there are several things that he needs to address, including the attacking area.

It was quite clear in the game at the iPro yesterday that recent signing Lukas Jutkiewicz was starved of support and that might be what ultimately cost us the game.

We didn’t create enough chances throughout the entire game to even warrant coming out of the game with a point, let alone all three, and it was clear to see that a striker, or a very effective number 10, is needed in January.

Of course summer signing Che Adams could play there, as could Diego Fabbrini, but Zola seems content on playing with five in midfield which doesn’t altogether suit our style of play, not that us fans really know what that is at this moment in time.

From speaking to a Watford official, Zola liked to play with one big striker and one small striker who could run on behind him, in there case I believe it was Troy Deeney and Matej Vydra.

Well for Blues it could quite easily be Jutkiewicz and Adams but Zola needs to be able to work that out for himself.

One of the suspected reasons for former boss Gary Rowett being sacked was that he didn’t spent correctly in previous windows, well Adams needs to be played because he is a serious young talent and I believe that he really is the future of the club.

At the start of the season, he set a goals target of 15 and he has only scored three so far. He needs to be played more if he wants to get anywhere near that target and Zola needs to bring out the best in him.

Although I believe that Jutkiewicz and Adams can continue to fire us in the right direction, Blues need a natural goal poacher, like Vydra at Watford, because that is what gets you up towards the top of the table.

Newcastle United have Dwight Gayle, Brighton and Hove Albion have Glenn Murray and even Barnsley have the likes have Sam Winnall, but Blues haven’t really got anyone like that.

Blues really need to pull their finger out in the January transfer window if they want to get into the play-offs and if that means spending £5+ million on a striker then so be it!
