Wow! What a catastrophic afternoon this has been for all those involved at Birmingham City and by the looks of things everyone in English football feels the same way.

From his ex-club Burton Albion to former professionals, the sacking of Gary Rowett by Blues has been met with disbelief and probably plenty of unwanted attention to the new owners who insist the move is the best thing for the club.

And just hours after his departure it seems as though there is already a replacement lined up. That replacement is former Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola.

No matter what you think about the ex-Watford boss, it is very clear that he will have a huge task to get the fans on his side because of what Rowett meant to a significant number of supporters.

On social media, Sky Sports claim that Zola is in Birmingham to finalise his contract with the club and he could even be announced as early as tomorrow so you have to ask yourself, is that a bad thing? How long has this been in the pipeline for? What actually went wrong for Rowett?

Personally, I’d love to be able to answer all of those questions for you but I just can’t. As an avid fan myself I couldn’t possibly tell you what went wrong.

Every time I met Rowett he always seemed pleased with what he was doing at the club whether that be at his press conferences or just outside the ground, he was a pleasure to be around, and the players clearly thought that as well.

But in football these things happen (don’t shoot me for pointing out the harsh but obvious truth) and with nothing likely to change in terms of Rowett coming back, it is now time to look ahead.

What can Zola do for Blues that Rowett didn’t? At this moment in time I can’t actually see what Zola offers, but that is just me! The fact that Lee Clark kept the job longer than Rowett is also still baffling me as well by the way.

However, the Italian has a vast amount of knowledge about the game and he even knows the Championship so there could be some logic in it I suppose.

Let’s fact it, we aren’t like our rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers who brought in somebody who didn’t know the league at all and then sacked him a few months later. Zola has some good experience in the division with Watford, previously taking them to the play-off final, but I am going to leave you with one question Blues fans…

What do you think Zola can offer Birmingham City?
