West Bromwich Albion boss Tony Pulis confirmed at his press conference this morning that they had received an approach from Blues for Craig Gardner and that negotiations were underway.

Over the past couple of years we have heard rumours about Gardner returning to Blues but rumours is all they were.

This time, though, there is a genuine deal on the cards whether that be a loan deal or a permanent deal and I think the move would be perfect for all parties.

Gardner isn’t getting the game time he needs at West Brom and, although there will be an added romance if he returned to Blues, he would also genuinely improve the team.

Personally, I think he is the type of player that could work perfectly in Gianfranco Zola`s midfield.

He is a player that, first and foremost, has an excellent work ethic and mentality which is crucial in any side.

The fact that he grew up supporting the club and knows what it’s like to play in front of the St Andrews fans will only be of benefit to us.

But he will also improve us in the technical side of the game. He won’t be one to shy away from the ball and, if things are going wrong, he’ll take the game by its horns.

In the Championship, I would suggest that he is an all round midfielder who can pass, tackle, do the dirty work and also drive from midfield into the forward areas.

From his previous time at the club, we are all well aware that he isn’t afraid to pull the trigger and a goalscoring midfielder is just what we need.

David Davis and Stephen Gleeson have chipped in with goals this season but Gardner is someone who regularly gets into goalscoring positions and knows when to make that move.

If the deal does go through for Gardner to return to Blues then we`ll have a top midfielder on our hands who knows the club and has a connection with the fans that still remains despite him leaving after the relegation.

West Brom seem to be open for the transfer to get done and I’m sure Gardner is itching at the chance of pulling on that Royal Blue shirt again.
