Birmingham goalkeeper Ben Foster says that he felt sorry for his opposite number in the Arsenal goals on Sunday.

Wojciech Szczesny made a gaff which allowed striker Obafemi Martins to get the easiest goal of his career to win the Carling Cup for Birmingham City.

Foster has had it himself in the past and more recently in the first leg of the cup semi-final against West Ham, when he allowed a Carlton Cole effort in when a save looked easy to make.

Foster had a better time in Sunday`s final, he pulled off a few notable stops to keep Arsenal out and was rewarded with the man of the match trophy for his trouble.

Foster told the Daily Star: ‘Of course I feel sympathy for him. I did the minute it happened.

‘But he is a fantastic prospect and it was very unfortunate on him for the goal.

‘He just needs to put this behind him and move on. He came in a couple of months ago and has done amazingly.’

He added: ‘You can see he is brimming with confidence and has got all the ability in the world and he needs to just move on. It’s as simple as that.

‘He has got a great career ahead of him and if he keeps doing what he is doing, he will be a very good keeper.

‘He has just got to forget about it. Everyone makes mistakes. You can make a few good saves and then let one in near the end and you are the villain.

‘That is the way it goes for the keeper.’
