Birmingham City played with a trialist leading the line yesterday against Benfica B. Devante Cole joined the club at St Georges park in order for Blues to take a look at what he can do.

Birmingham are desperate to add to their striking ranks and it has understandably lead to an influx in trialists during the last few friendlies the club have been involved with.

Devante Cole started as a Manchester City trainee and spent time at Barnsley, on loan, where he made 15(4) appearances, scoring 5 goals. He also had a loan spell with MK Dons and make 5(10) appearances scoring 3 goals.

To make it at Man City these days you probably need to be very special or potentially come through at a different club, get first team football and it will be a big money transfer.

We had no indication as to what Blues thought of him and from watching the game back it doesn’t seem like he set the world on fire. Whilst involved in some good play, he sometimes struggled to control the ball and perhaps was lacking in match fitness.

Given that Rowett has stated time and time again that he only wants players that are going to come in and challenge for the first team, I would be surprised to see this deal done.

This pre-season it has been the youth products of this very club that have shone brightest, Reece Brown and Koby Arthur have both shown what capable players they are.

Birmingham gear up for their final friendly against Leicester on Saturday, where it will be the last chance for the players to lay down their marker for the season.
