Reports have emerged tonight that Birmingham City have been handed a much welcomed boost in their attempts to bring former loanee Diego Fabbrini back to the club.

According to WD Sport, recently promoted Watford are willing to let Fabbrini leave the club in search of first team football. Their sources believe that a season long loan deal is set to be agreed in the coming days and that an official announcement will follow it shortly after.

However, unlike Lewis McGugan, who they are also letting join championship side Sheffield Wednesday, the Italian has travelled with the squad to Germany.

During their game that was played earlier this evening, Fabbrini was a second half substitute for Almen Abdi and it is rumoured that he was on the phone as he was leaving the stadium but it is certainly unclear as to whether that was about his future or something else.

Should Fabbrini return to St.Andrews, it would provide a welcome lift as manager Gary Rowett and his staff continue to struggle to bring top quality players through the door who can challenge for a starting place next season.

After the speculation began to circle, another former loanee, Lloyd Dyer, told the website about how Fabbrini settled in at Birmingham and how much fans and players loved him and his enthusiasm.

He said: “He lit up the place. He was awesome down there, they loved him.”
