Former Blues star Robbie Savage has been rushed to hospital midway through an ill-fated trek up Mount Kilimanjaro.

The 38 year old suffered altitude sickness during the trek for charity after reaching the height of 12,000 feet, with over 7,000 feet remaining on the mountain in East Africa.

All in all it took medics over eight hours to get Savage down and after being taken to hospital it was confirmed that he had critical amounts of oxygen in the blood and also fluid in his lungs.

Savage told the Daily Mirror: ‘I’m absolutely gutted I didn’t make it to the top.

‘I thought my head was going to explode, I felt dizzy and couldn’t breathe. I had to be rushed down to a safe altitude.’
