Only Birmingham City can be linked with signing Jermaine Defoe while in the midst of a relegation battle to avoid the drop into the third tier of English football.

But let’s be realistic for a moment. Not since the days of Kevin Phillips have Blues had a prolific goalscorer. Marlon King tried his damnest, and had a pretty decent record. The same can be said for Clayton Donaldson while Lukas Jutkiewicz has never managed to net more than his current haul of 12 in a season.

How this season could have been different with a fox in the box type. How Gianfranco Zola’s tenure could have been different.

Whoever the manager next season, and whatever division Blues are in, a goalscorer is a must. Whether we are fighting for a play off place – a back door to the Premier League – with Harry Redknapp in charge, or whether Blues are battling to climb out of League One, their successes will require a man who can stick the ball in the onion bag.

Is Zlatan available?

  • We can only dream, wages, signing on fee and the host of Premier League clubs lining up to sign him.

  • Deli Ali would have been right ..so would have Andy Johnson second time around but alas It was owners talking big …..the fact is a club is only as big as the main striker..Get your money out TTA……

  • What when and where have we been linked with Jermaine Defoe?. We are realistic we are not stupid we know there will be story’s linking us with every player that as played under Redknapp and we know 95% of them will be made up media garbage. Stay up or go down a striker is a must if we do stay up witch I think we will and Harry stays I think he would look to overall the team 6 out 8 in some first team players will go as well as bit park les necessary players. • Waycoolblue – various bookies have took the lazy approach and linked us with Defoe. Your comment is kind of the whole point of my article.

  • The problem we have is we don’t really create enough chances. Our service to our front men is poor. The likes of Juke and Che have to fight off defenders before creating a shooting chance for themselves. Kevin Phillips and Mikael Forssell had the special ingredient where they could create a chance out of nothing. A bit like Chris Wood did versus us for Leeds. We have averaged less than a goal a game this season. A player like Macheda could be exactly what we need but until we improve our creativity in midfield and our supply we will struggle to score.

  • Ljaz – remember the defeat at Sheff Wed under Zola? We created enough chances to win 5 games. Hit the woodwork several times, missed 3 sitters… summed up Zola’s earlier tenure really.
