Do Blues Still Need To Strengthen?

It’s now 31 days until the Football League Championship season kicks off. Blues will face Reading at St Andrews and I thought I would come up with eleven players out of our current squad that could make Gary Rowett’s team for that first match on the 8th of August. With the eleven I make up, you guys can leave in the comments below as to wheather you feel our squad still needs strengthening..

Formation- 4-2-3-1.

Paul Caddis; Michael Morrison; Jonathan Spector; Jonathan Grounds.
David Davis; Reece Brown; David Coterrill; Andrew Shinnie; Demarai Gray.
Clayton Donaldson.


Goalkeeper- Tomasz Kuszczak is my chosen number one keeper, I’ve picked the polish stopper as the number one purely due to his experience. I can’t say I’ve watched him or Legzdins play many times apart from when they both put in some shocking performances for Brighton and Derby respectively at St Andrews a couple of years back.

Defence- My defence is pretty similar to what ended last year with Paul Caddis; Michael Morrison; Jonathan Spector and Jonathan Grounds all making up the back four. I do feel that the defence does need some strengthening as I don’t completely trust Spector and Morrison as a centre back pairing, unfortunately at the moment it’s all we have got. Caddis and Grounds are a very reliable duo with suitable back up in Spector; Hancox and Robinson all being trusted full backs in reserve.

Midfield- The central pairing I have chosen may cause some controversy as I have gone with David Davis the ball winner and Reece Brown the playmaker in the centre of the park. I feel Brown has the ability to step up to first team action next season, with Davis partnering him in the middle he won’t have to do as much dirty work in the middle which will suit him to go out and express himself. I have then chosen David Cotterill; Andrew Shinnie and Demarai Gray as the attacking trio in front. Those three pick themselves in the Blues team due to some outstanding performances throughout last season and especially since Gary Rowett took over. I’m also sure Jaques Maghoma will provide a great deal of competition for all three of those players due to his versatility whilst Lee Novak is a suitable back up for the left or right winger slot.

Striker- This is where the problem lies for Blues, I have chosen the evergreen Clayton Donaldson in that lone striker role. However, if Donaldson was to suffer an injury or loss of form, Blues would definitely struggle to fill the gap. I don’t feel Wes Thomas or Lee Novak are good enough for the championship, this is why I’m praying the speculation about John Guidetti is true as a signing of his calibre could really push Blues onto the next level.
