DJ’s Speaks On Captain Honour

Damien Johnson has spoke of his surprise and delight at being made captain for the forthcoming season.

‘It was nothing formal when the gaffer told me, it was just on the training pitch. I was shocked and very surprised. I was overwhelmed as well, it’s a big honour.

‘I know I was maybe not the obvious candidate and I don’t know what the reaction has been, but it’s something I am looking forward to and I see as a challenge.

‘I have played under a few different captains and it’s a bit of a stereotype that he is a ranter and a raver.

‘That’s not the type of person I am. But I will say, when it comes to stuff on the pitch, I do put my point across. If things need to be said, I will say them and that’s always been the case for me.

‘I don’t see it changing me too much. Hopefully I will be able to show the lads on the pitch, lead by example. That’s what the gaffer said to me to do.

‘There’s lads who come out with battle cries in the press, that’s their way of doing it, I just hope to be effective on the pitch.

‘We have a young squad, we want to play a certain way this year and I can hopefully be at the forefront of that really.’

Speaking of his reluctance to give interviews in general he joked:

‘I think our press officer Andy Maxey probably had a sleepless night at the prospect of me being captain! I like to do my talking on the pitch.

‘Obviously I will be more accessible to chaps like yourself and what needs to be done on behalf of the club, I will do it.’

I think personally that DJ will prove himself to be a very capable captain over the course of a season. With Upson still to return it remains to be seen whether the armband will change hands, but regardless his calm nature combined with his drive on the pitch, he shouldn’t find it too hard to lead by example as he claims he prefers to do.
