Damien Johnson has expressed his delight at securing a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2010.

Speaking on the official site today, Johnson said:

‘I was delighted to be offered the contract, I have never had any desire to go anywhere else.

‘I have really enjoyed my football here, I have had my best times at Birmingham, and I enjoy living in the city.

‘After relegation, there was always going to be a big upheaval but I always said if the club were happy to have me, that suited me fine.

‘It was not as if I was looking to move on, I wanted to help Birmingham get back to where we belong in the Premiership and I really believe we are heading in the right direction.

‘I’ve sat down and watched us the last few weeks and have seen the lads really fighting and I’ve thought ‘that’s more like it’.

‘The balance of the team looks good, everyone knows their jobs and the spirit is excellent, there’s a vibe around the place. It’s great to see the change in us. Last season wasn’t much fun for anyone.

‘I wouldn’t say we’ve cracked it just yet even though we are top of the league, but definitely things have kind of clicked and we know how to win games in this division.

‘The injury hasn’t been a conventional one, I haven’t been sitting in the physios’ room having ultra-sound treatment.

‘I have carried on a training regime without any contact work. I have been having one-to-one sessions with our fitness coach Dan Harris and he has been great at keeping me going.

‘Hopefully I will be able to join in fully from Saturday – six weeks since it happened – and then maybe get in a reserve game or two.

‘I expect to be back for Christmas and the way the team is playing, I will face a challenge to get in – and that’s good.’
