Former Birmingham striker DJ Campbell has revealed that he considered giving up football following the stigma he was left with as a result of the match fixing allegations against him.

Campbell was arrested following a newspaper sting on Sam Sodje. The former Portsmouth defender had claimed he could arrange red and yellow cards within professional games.

Following an investigation, Campbell was cleared. However the damage was already done and just 12 months later Campbell found himself without a club and with his hard earned reputation in ruins.

Innocent until proven guilty is exactly what you get from the justice system. But it is not what you get from the public. The standard by which you are judged by through the media is far lower than what would happen in court.

As a result the former Blues man found himself considering whether it was all worth it. But instead of giving up at the age of 32, he found solace in an old friend and an old manager.

Johnson Hippolyte, current Maidenhead boss, was the man who convinced Campbell to keep playing after he was released by Aston Villa as a youngster. It was under Hippolyte that Campbell caught the eye of Brentford and then Birmingham City.

After joking about Campbell playing for him again, just that happened. The lethal striker has scored three in three for his new club and is finally enjoying his football again.

Will Campbell find himself in the higher leagues again? quite possibly, his goal scoring talent has never deserted him. He joined Birmingham in 2006 for half of a million point and may want one last bow in the leagues he spent most of his career.
