Gianfranco Zola`s future as Birmingham City manager is likely to rest on the outcome of Friday evening`s derby at Wolves, according to sources close to the club.

The Italian has overseen just one win from his 14 games in charge of Blues – a run of form that has seen them slip from the play-off picture into the relegation mire. There was a feeling amongst fans that Saturday`s 4-1 hammering at home to struggling QPR was the final nail in Zola`s coffin, but he is unlikely to be sacked when he speaks with the club`s owners today.

The situation is being closely monitored, though, and there is a feeling that the board are running out of patience with their manager. Our source told us – “Wolves away, a big derby in more ways than one – a must win for Zola or its farewell”.

Zola has attempted to adapt Blues` style of play and make them a more expansive team. While it seemed to be slowly working for a short period of time, the team has taken drastic backwards steps and the QPR defeat was up there with the worst home performances of recent times.
