Former Birmingham City manager Gary Rowett was close to agreeing a loan deal with West Bromwich Albion for winger Callum McManaman, a source close to Vital Blues understands.

The move would have given Blues first refusal on the permanent capture of the 25 year-old for a cut price £2.5m at the end of the season. Of course, after Rowett’s departure, the deal seems to have been put on the back burner.

McManaman has found his chances at The Hawthorns limited this season. His only involvement in the first team came in an EFL cup tie against Luton Town back in October. For the most part, the former Wigan man has been playing in the Baggies’ U21 team.

McManaman would have been a marquee signing for Blues and their most expensive in almost six years, assuming that the loan spell was a success and a permanent deal was agreed. However, other clubs now seemed to have made enquiries about the player who canĀ  play left wing or right wing.
