When choosing a new born baby’s name whom will have the surname Davis, is it really wise to choose David? It is a matter of personal opinion but I cannot write an article about a player who I rate and not have a slight dig at his parents lack of creativity. He even rivals David George Best Cotterill for the weirdest name at the club!

On a more football related note, I was delighted to hear that Birmingham City had triggered a clause which enabled Davis to play for us for one more year on the current contract. The main reason why I am delighted is because he epitomizes everything that the club stands for. In the big games and the not so big games, he is never cowering behind hid team mates. He grabs the bull by the horns and really likes to leave a mark on the game not to mention a stud mark on the opponents leg too.

I rate Davis partially for the things that you don’t see. He doesn’t look to be that effective in certain situations but that is all due to his positioning. He manages to cut off potential passes through the middle of the park which means that the midfielder or defender on the opposing side has to either play a long ball which Morrison can deal with easily in the air, or they have to play backwards. Either way, it eases pressure from our back 4 and enables the other team to get frustrated.

Davis is like a dog chasing a bone; he is very determined. He is also very good at being a pain in the backside. For someone who is as chunky as he is, the pace at which he covers the ground is quite brilliant. I certainly admire his work ethic and he must have put a lot of hours in on the training ground in order to maintain match fitness when he hasn’t been able to start games.

The thing that I would love to see him work on is his finishing. At the moment, the other 4 central options all have better strikes than he does and a goal threat is something that is very handy to have. It drags the opposing defenders out in order to try and stop you from scoring but unfortunately, Davis doesn’t carry that threat just yet.

However, I am more than delighted to see him sign a new deal and I would prefer him to start more games. We don’t have a player quite like him and I think this variety is more than needed.
