The Birmingham Mail today reported that Blues young shot stopper Nick Townsend could possibly be on his way out of the club. The mail reported that Barnsley have had a bid accepted by Blues as they attempt to find a back up keeper. This comes just two months after the young stopper, who has been a regular supporter down St Andrews since an early age, penned a new two year deal with his boyhood club.

Townsend is a quality young shot stopper and considering his lack of height, he is a very commanding goalkeeper. It has been said previously by Gary Rowett that Townsend could have a spell away on loan this season, however I didn’t expect the club to be moving him on this early in the season and certainly didn’t expect him to be sold this season.

I presume I join a long list of Blues fans who would be very disappointed by this news, especially combining the fact that he is a Blues fan himself. After watching him numerous times for Lincoln and the U21 side, I definitely see potential in Townsend and would be gutted if this rumour was true. Even manager Gary Rowett has praised the 20 year old stopper on many occasions, clarifying that he has a future at the club, hence why he signed a new contract, something seems strange to me.

Townsend will actually be a part of the travelling squad to Northampton Town tomorrow, although presumably as a substitute it is nice that he along with many other youngsters have been but up for selection. It would be nice if the club, Rowett or Townsend himself could come out and rubbish these rumours. If they don’t, perhaps that signifies that Townsend could be shown the door to Barnsley?
Only time will tell!

Why not let me know your thoughts on Nick Townsend’s potential exit?
