When Chris Burke opted not to renew his contract at Birmingham City in the summer and signed instead for Nottingham Forest the St. Andrews faithful were worried that the gap on the right side of midfield, left by the Scotsman would not be filled. However at the same time Welshman David Cotterill decided to look for pastures new after leaving Doncaster Rovers and he ended up signing for Birmingham City becoming one of Lee Clark`s most important signings of the summer.

From his first game of the season at home to Cambridge United in the League Cup he showed good touches and it was clear to see that he had the potential to fill the vacancy that Burke had left behind. In his first nine games for the club we have become accustomed to his pin point passes and sharp first touch. The 26 year old has already created over thirty goal scoring chances for his team mates; more than any other player in the league.

He has two assists and two goals to his name in Blues last two fixtures at home to Fulham and away to Millwall and it is clear to see that he is now brimming with confidence and willing to have a shot from anywhere. On Tuesday`s game against Millwall he scored a free kick from 25 yards out, He also scored from a similar distance at home to Fulham last Saturday in Birmingham 2-1 loss.

Cotterill has two man of the match awards to his name and is already looked on as an influential player in a reasonably inexperienced side. Not only does he seem to be a role model on the pitch, young wingers such as Koby Arthur and Demarai Gray seem to be picking up the former Wigan Athletic man`s eye for goal and tricky feet. He seems to be a God send for Birmingham`s forward line of Wes Thomas and Clayton Donaldson as he has seemed to find their runs seemingly with ease this league campaign.

Cotterill who was named in the PFA League One Team of the year in 2012-13 season should now be looking to improve on his twenty Welsh Caps after his inclusion in yesterday`s Wales`s squad for the upcoming European Championship 2016 Qualification games against Cyprus and Bosnia-Herzegovina. He has been a breath of fresh air on the wing for Blues this year and it is no coincidence that Blues seem to have created more opportunities in their last three games since Cotterill has begun to shine for his new side.
