With many experienced players leaving the Birmingham Ladies squad this off season, many thought that we would buy in players of similar standards in order to avoid a relegation battle like last season. However, recent contract renewals to younger players such as Mannion and Lawley have shown that the manager, David Parker, is putting his faith in youth players yet again.

Today sees Coral Haines add her name to the graduating youngsters that we have brought through as part of this ethos and philosophy. Despite making her debut at 16, she still had a lot of strength to develop as well as overall game play so it is understandable that recently she has been on the fringes of the first team.

However, with the 2 year contract in place, Parker has shown that he believes this to be the season where she kicks on and really cements herself as a first team player. She is 19 now so has done a lot of developing since her early days and she knows a lot of the players that have graduated with her from the development squad. The likes of Mannion as I have mentioned above, have been part of the Blues’ set up for a good few years so they have a connection and an understanding of how to play together.

Haines is a forward and he main attribute is her vision. She is one of the more selfless strikers that I have come across. Usually she will pick out a team mate and use this to draw defenders in to create space both for herself and for her fellow team mates. It shows a certain amount of intelligence to do this but Haines seems to have this in abundance.

Parker says on the official Ladies site that she has great ‘flair’ and is ‘developing her all round game.’ This is great to hear as attackers often need creativity in order to beat their man rather than just doing the simple things well. It is also admirable that she is willing to work on any improvements she is given so it sounds like she has the right attitude to succeed at the club.
