Birmingham City have today confirmed the departure of defender Emilio Nsue with the right-back joining Cypriot side APOEL for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old had been on the books at Blues for less than a year after he was brought in by former manager Gianfranco Zola last January but after falling down the pecking order in the first team behind summer signing Maxime Colin, he was always likely to leave in January.

Formerly of fellow Sky Bet Championship side Middlesbrough, Nsue joined Blues for an initial fee of £1 million last year, rising to a potential £2 million, and he now becomes the first first team player to leave the club in the winter transfer window this season, with at least another three expected to follow.

Vital Birmingham understands that the club are looking to get rid of some dead wood at the club, like they did with David Cotterill last month, with the likes of Stephen Gleeson, Jason Lowe and potentially loanee Carl Jenkinson all on the hit list.
